The Davco Guide to Flyable Baskets

When you need to move tools, equipment or materials from one level to another, flyable Baskets could be the strategic answer you require.

With lifting points set at each corner, flyable baskets can be picked up and moved by either a static or mobile crane. For situations where a forklift is impractical or unavailable, a truck mounted HIAB-style crane can be used to load or unload a flyable Basket.

Here’s our guide to flyable, crane-lift compatible baskets.

What to Expect From a Flyable Basket

At Davco, we build baskets, carts and metal containers for every industry. Our standard designs can be applied to many uses, or readily customized to serve particular specifications.

The R2GW-FBHD is a rigid wire two-gate wire mesh steel Basket that delivers 18 cubic feet of capacity, ideal for a number of uses.

Our Davco standard, in stock, flyable Basket is 40 ½” x 34 ½” x 32” high (94” when stacked three high). These Baskets can be customized for various sizes and applications.

Where Can You Use a Flyable Basket?

Lifting and moving materials and equipment is easy with flyable baskets that can be picked up by a crane and deposited anywhere on a construction site, dock or depot.

The baskets are built with end-to-end transportation links planned in. Designed to fill a fifty-three foot truck three-high, 108 baskets can be moved on one vehicle and loaded with either a crane or forklift.

Rugged and robust carbon steel construction makes them ideal for difficult deliveries of heavy items or abrasive materials.

When time is of the essence and you cannot compromise on quality, flyable baskets are a fast way to load, unload and distribute materials and arisings on a construction site.

Flyable Baskets on Construction Sites

Timber pallets are the traditional mode of transportation for construction materials, but they get damaged easily, and many are non-returnable, and none of them fly. If you need to move materials across a site, up to a higher, or lower level, then specific lifting equipment needs to be used.

Inner city construction sites use cranes to counter the restricted footprint of the working area, and these machines are essential for getting material to the workface. Slinging an R2GW-FBHD flyable Basket, rated for lifting and strengthened with carbon steel, helps to make delivering what’s needed fast and safe.

Sensible Site Storage

A tidy site is a safe site, so keeping materials or rubbish separated and secure within a carbon steel basket is a great way to stay in control. With the lifting capability, no area of a construction site is off-limits either.

Mesh sides mean that it is simple to see at a glance whether a basket is in use, or at capacity, awaiting removal. The twin door design makes access easy too, especially when space is limited, or directional.

The stacking design also helps to save space on site, in storage and laydown areas, and material processing. The drop-down gates mean that basket contents remain accessible when stacked too, so items can remain segregated for selection and use.

Forklift Versus Crane

If a building site does not have room for a forklift, using flyable baskets to deliver materials is safer than timber pallets with strops or chains. A fixed crane, or a truck mounted HIAB can unload liftable containers quickly.

Lifting with a fixed site tower crane is a good option with flyable baskets as it means the contents can be delivered to all accessible areas. The welded lugs are secure lifting points rated for the weight of the Basket plus the weight of its contents.

Having said that, these baskets are also manoeuvrable by either forklift or pallet truck and can be supplied with heavy duty steerable casters for manual handling. An empty basket weighs in at 122lbs, which makes manual alignment within reasonable parameters.

Utility and Waste Management

With a UDL of 2500lbs, the R2GW-FBHD has a massive load capacity, ideal for moving large items. When working in remote areas with restricted access, using flyable baskets with a mobile crane can get materials and equipment into position, or lift waste or debris in a contained and tidy manner.

The baskets each have a capacity of 18 cubic feet, making the math easy when volumes of material waste need to be calculated. The mesh walls of the containers make for great visibility, making visual assessment straightforward at a distance.

For recycling centres, or in industries where large amounts of waste are generated, flyable Baskets can be easily hoisted onto trucks for removal and processing. Baskets can be exchanged quickly and safely with a truck mounted crane.

Custom Flyable Basket Development

Public utilities are responsible for ensuring that we all benefit from essential infrastructure at all times in all conditions. Oftentimes they need to use some very heavy equipment to keep things running smoothly.

One Davco client had specific requirements for flyable baskets that could take extremely rough handling in the toughest conditions. We took their specifications and developed a rugged, engineer certified flyable basket.

We took the client on the development journey every step of the way to be certain all their needs were met. Read the case study here to see how we approach a challenge!

Warehousing and Distribution Centres

When a warehouse or distribution centre is subject to seasonal or other trends where fixed racking could hamper efforts to organize, flyable baskets matched to a gantry lifting system can be extraordinarily flexible.

Interchangeable, and stackable with other Davco Basket products, flyable baskets can extend the capacity of a distribution centre that uses a gantry system.

If space on a dock is limited, lifting baskets from transit to dock and back is quick, safe and controllable with either a dock, or transit mounted crane.

Final Thoughts

When space is limited and speed of loading and unloading is key to the success of your business, R2GW-FBHD flyable baskets could give you the edge you’re looking for.
